Video Production

My main area of work for the last 9 years has been corporate video for IBM. I created training videos, tutorials, HR updates, promotions and much more for IBM’s almost 400 thousand employees. These film shoots were medium sized production sets where I hired and managed camera, lighting, grip and audio crew members. I was involved from the very start, shaping the learning content from the client into scripts, all the way through production and post production. These videos were often a part of a multi-episode training series that involved a lot of organization to keep the edits consistent and deliver on time. Below are some examples of videos that showcase both my cinematography and editing capabilities.

Workday Promo / One of several short promotions done for a software tool used by IBM managers

This video is a great example of how the editing can accentuate the comedy brought by the script and actors. I condensed many takes, performance options and rounds of review into the final cut you see. During the filming my role as director of photography and camera operator was important not just for the visuals and look of the final product but also for working with the actors on the timing. I love being able to bring comedy into something simple like this.

Compensation Advisor / A showcase for an IBM internal HR tool

This video is promoting another piece of software but is a good example of a different approach. This video showcases the UI of the tool but uses actors and a narrative to bring more of a human aspect into it. Using a narrator to convey the important information brings a unique style to working with the actors and showing the story. As part of this editing process I also had to work with a design file to animate a website UI. For more animation work there is a reel at the bottom of this page.

Mental Health Awareness / Created for the HR department to promote awareness and compassion

I have worked on a lot of videos like this for the HR department that touch on sensitive subjects like mental health. It’s a unique challenge to keep such a serious tone and teach people about the proper responses to human emotion. The sequence where our lead gets overwhelmed at work required the right lens, camera move and editing to get the frantic energy coming through. I am always proud to work on important pieces like this that promote a good cause.

Grant Miller Interview / A talking head style video with B-roll

This is an older example of an interview style video that I did lots of early in my career. This video was a spotlight for one of IBM’s engineers. At my first role out of university I worked for a tea company where I travelled around the US filming chefs cooking with tea infused recipes. I am very comfortable with this DSLR style, run and gun type of filming where I blend interview footage with context shots. It is always a fun editing exercise creating a narrative from the interview transcript and then matching the B-roll you got with the content.

Effects and Animations

As part of my work for All Purpose and IBM I am constantly doing animated titles or infographics as elements of larger videos. After Effects is my favorite program to work with and ever since university I have loved creating effects. I have done lots of greenscreen setups, screen replacements and rotoscoping. I animate tons of 2D text, charts and website UI. I have also done some basic character animation with puppet tool.

Effects and Animation Reel / A sampling of some of my After Effects work

This reel showcases a few examples of animations and effects I have created. Using text and images to convey information is a big part of my work with IBM Learning. While some of it is not always the most flashy it is a great skill to have. There are also some great examples of greenscreen and visual effects like coloring.

Just as some bonus content here is a final project from my university days. I am still very proud of what we were able to accomplish with no budget, no experience just a lot of late nights. Here is a fun throwback to my reel when I graduated back in 2015!
